New York – A protest organized by pro-monarchy supporters in Kathmandu escalated into violence on Thursday, with demonstrators launching a vicious attack on the Annapurna Media Network (AMN) Tower at Tinkune. The assault left the building severely damaged and put the lives of journalists and employees at significant risk.
The incident unfolded when a group of protestors began throwing stones at the AMN building, breaking windows and attempting to start a fire inside the premises. The attack severely impacted the exterior of the building, and several windows were shattered, with flames briefly igniting in certain areas. The quick escalation of violence has raised serious concerns regarding press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nepal.
AMN, a prominent and respected media outlet known for its independent and unbiased journalism, condemned the attack, calling it an assault on democratic values. The network expressed deep concern for the safety of its staff and the growing threats against the press. “This attack is an act of terrorism. We strongly condemn such violent and terrorist activities against independent media organizations,” said the General Manager of AMN. “We call upon national and international organizations to stand with us in solidarity, and we urge the government to take strict action against those responsible for this horrific act of violence.”
In addition to the targeted assault on AMN, the protestors also wreaked havoc on nearby commercial and residential properties in the Tinkune area. Several buildings were set on fire, and significant damage was caused throughout the district.
The attack has sparked outrage across the country, with many people expressing concerns about the rising dangers to press freedom in Nepal. The global media rights community has joined in denouncing the violence, with calls for swift action to ensure the protection of journalists and the safety of media organizations.
Prominent American politician and community activist Nabaraj KC also condemned the attack, stating, “The attack on Annapurna Media Network should never have happened. This is an assault not only on the press but on the very foundations of democracy. It is crucial that we stand against such violence and protect the rights of journalists everywhere.”
In a statement, AMN reiterated its commitment to responsible journalism despite the attack. “We remain committed to our mission of providing unbiased and reliable news. However, we stress the urgent need for collective efforts to protect press freedom in Nepal and prevent future attacks on media houses and corporate entities,” the statement read.
With the situation growing more tense, AMN has called for immediate action from both national and international communities to ensure the safety of media professionals in Nepal. The network is seeking support from relevant organizations to ensure justice and security for journalists, urging the government to take firm action against the perpetrators.
This attack comes at a time when Nepal’s press freedom is under increasing scrutiny. Media organizations are calling for greater protection in the face of threats, both physical and legal, against journalists and news outlets. As the country grapples with these challenges, the AMN attack serves as a stark reminder of the precarious situation facing media professionals in the region.
The international community has expressed concern, urging Nepal’s government to take immediate and effective steps to address the growing dangers to press freedom and ensure the safety of journalists working in the country.
