One of Nepal’s most prestigious institutions, Kathmandu University (KU), is struggling with an administrative crisis as it remains without a Vice-Chancellor (VC) since January 2025.
The absence of a top academic leader has caused major disruptions, affecting budget approvals, faculty hiring, and student research programs.
The university’s executive council has yet to agree on a new appointment, with political influences delaying the selection process.
Professors and students are growing frustrated. “We have research grants pending and new programs that cannot start without VC approval,” said Dr. Sushil Sharma, a faculty member at KU.
Student groups have started protests, demanding immediate action. “We need strong leadership, not political games,” said Bimala Gurung, a KU student activist.
The Nepal government has promised to resolve the issue soon, but concerns remain about political interference in academic institutions.
As one of Nepal’s leading universities, Kathmandu University’s leadership crisis could impact its global reputation and student enrollment in the coming years.
