In a historic move, the Texas state government has officially declared March 13 as ‘Lumbini Advocacy Day,’ recognizing Nepal as the birthplace of Lord Buddha and acknowledging the contributions of the Nepali-American community in the United States.
The declaration was made possible through efforts by Nepali community leaders, Buddhist organizations, and Texas state lawmakers, led by Representative Suleman Lalani.
“Nepali immigrants have been a part of Texas’s diverse cultural landscape for decades,” said Lalani during the official announcement. “Their contributions to business, education, and community service deserve recognition.”
For the approximately 50,000 Nepali-Americans living in Texas, this announcement is a source of immense pride. Many Nepalis see this as a step toward greater recognition of Nepal’s cultural and spiritual significance.
“People often question where Buddha was born. Now, a U.S. state recognizing Lumbini as his birthplace sends a powerful message,” said Dr. Anju Pandey, a Texas-based Nepali professor.
Celebrations for the first Lumbini Advocacy Day will include cultural performances, panel discussions on Buddhism, and a Nepali food festival in cities like Houston and Dallas.
Nepali organizations hope that other U.S. states will follow Texas’s lead, increasing awareness about Nepal’s historical and religious contributions to the world.
